Your child is identified as a gifted student - the student has a Gifted IEP - but you are not very satisified with their progress.
You realize that that there is more to learn about the 'gifted education system' and you would like to inform yourself about
that system.
Parents in this category generally are surprised to learn that Pennsylvania's gifted ed regulations
call for them to be active participants in their gifted child's educational planning. Parents are expected to provide input
into their child's plan and, ultimately, are asked to approve or disapprove the educational plan the district proposes.
To
participate effectively in the process you first need to understand the basics of Pennsylvania's gifted education regulations. Links
to introductory materials at the bottom of this page. It takes about 20-30 minutes to read through this material.
Parents
often believe that Districts are only required to offer a 'Gifted Program', that gifted education occurs only in group settings,
and that the District alone is responsible for both identifying and appropriately educating gifted children. That's
not the case.
